A new Spin for 2012!

My New Year's resolution was to learn to spin--- yarn, that is.  I got this nifty supported spindle, the Spindolyn, from Santa (thank you Santa!), and on New Year's Eve eve, I took a trip over to Uncommon Threads in Palm Harbor.  Not only did I get a big bag of really cool fiber, the spinning teacher was in, so another customer and I got a free lesson!  :)

The demo was on a drop spindle, but the principle is the same.  Here is the Spindolyn in action:

My first fiber selection, 1.1 ounces of Merino amethyst:
Beginning to be spun:
All spun into 'singles':
wound off the Spindolyn into the first ball:

divided into two balls for plying:

Plied into three two-ply hanks:
Woot!

I used this tutorial. The next step is setting the twist, which will probably happen tomorrow.

Proverbs 31:19  She lays her hands to the distaff, and her hands hold the spindle.

  1. Awesome!!! You rock, Joy! I really want to learn to spin someday, too. Gorgeous colorway. Man, I wish we lived closer. We could have tons of yarn-y fun. :)

…btw, I just finished my first knitted socks! I'll be putting pics on ravelry soon.
